The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico is a treasure trove of natural beauty, ancient history, and vibrant culture. In this blog, we’ll embark on an unforgettable journey along the Riviera Maya, starting from the beaches of Cancun and continuing through the picturesque coastal towns of Akumal and Tulum, before venturing inland to the enchanting waters of Bacalar. Join me as we explore the best that this stunning region has to offer.

Day 1: Cancun – Gateway to Paradise

  • Morning  in Cancun: Spend your morning relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Cancun, such as Playa Delfines, and take in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
  • Afternoon: Explore the vibrant Hotel Zone, known for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. Don’t miss a visit to Mercado 28 for local crafts and souvenirs.
  • Evening: Savor traditional Mexican cuisine at a local restaurant or venture into downtown Cancun for a taste of authentic street food.

Day 2: Akumal – The Turtle Haven

  • Morning: Drive south to Akumal, a renowned destination for sea turtle encounters. Snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Akumal Bay and swim alongside these gentle creatures. The turtles are protected here. You will now need to pay to enter a protected “park” where they will take you to swim with the turtles and you can book a boat trip where they will take yu out to a cove to snorkel.  This was my favorite!!
  • Afternoon: Enjoy a beachfront lunch at one of Akumal’s seaside restaurants. Don’t forget to try fresh ceviche and a margarita or a Michelada.
  • Evening: Take a leisurely stroll along Akumal’s tranquil beaches and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Day 3: Tulum – Beach Bliss and History

  • Morning: Depart for Tulum, a coastal town famous for its Mayan ruins. Explore the archaeological site of Tulum, perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
  • Afternoon: Relax on Tulum’s beautiful beaches, known for their soft white sand and clear waters. Rent a “bed” on the beach and they will serve you all day. You can nap, swim in the ocean, eat tacos, drink your margaritta and repeat.  This is really the best experience.  Visit the Tulum Beach Road for boutique shops and beachfront bars.
  • Evening: Savor seafood at a beachfront restaurant while watching the sunset over the ocean.

Day 4: Bacalar – The Lagoon of Seven Colors

  • Morning: Begin your journey inland to Bacalar, known for its mesmerizing Lagoon of Seven Colors. Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters and admire the ever-changing shades of blue.
  • Afternoon: Explore Fort San Felipe Bacalar, a historic fort that once protected the town from pirates. Visit the Cenote Azul, a stunning natural pool. You can rent a boat or a sailboat with sky belle sailing  They will take you around the lake – that is so large it looks like the ocean. You can do this all day or 1/2 day of your choosing.
  • Evening: Dine at a local restaurant with a view of the lagoon, and if you’re lucky, catch a starlit night over the “Lake of Seven Colors.”

Day 5: Bacalar – Relaxation and Reflection

  • Morning: Spend your last morning in Bacalar leisurely kayaking or paddleboarding on the lagoon.
  • Afternoon: Enjoy a picnic by the lagoon or simply relax by the shore. Take in the tranquility and natural beauty of Bacalar.
  • Evening: As the sun sets over the lagoon, reflect on the memories you’ve created during your journey through the Riviera Maya.

From the energy of Cancun to the serene beauty of Bacalar’s lagoon, this journey through the Riviera Maya is a testament to the diverse experiences Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula has to offer. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a blend of both, this itinerary promises unforgettable moments and a deep appreciation for the natural and cultural wonders of this enchanting region.
