Take the gondola to the top of the mountain to explore Mountain Village. This is my preferred place to get a hotel or Vrbo. Hotel Madeline is my favorite place to stay.

Festivals and Cultural Delights:

Telluride’s cultural calendar is vibrant year-round. The Telluride Film Festival draws cinephiles from around the world the first week of September. The festival is known for its intimate and unpretentious atmosphere. Attendees have the opportunity to interact with filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals in a relaxed and informal setting. The Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Blues & Brews Festival is typically held in June each year. It is a renowned music festival and features a lineup of bluegrass and Americana musicians. The festival usually spans several days, creating an irresistible mix of music, camaraderie, with the Telluride mountain air.

Outdoor Adventures Beyond the Slopes:

While skiing is a major draw, Telluride offers a plethora of outdoor activities beyond the slopes. Hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, and rock climbing are just a few ways to explore the rugged terrain and breath the crisp mountain air.

There are multiple hiking trails to explore this incredible mountain town of the San Juan Mountains. I recommend a hike to Hope Lake.

The hike to Hope Lake begins at the Trout Lake Trailhead, just a short drive from Telluride. The initial part of the trail takes you through a dense forest of spruce and fir trees.  As the trail ascends, there is a creek and open alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during the summer months. As you keep climbing the switchbacks you will finally reach Hope Lake. It is a moment of pure serenity. The lake reflects the towering peaks and the clear blue sky, creating a scene straight out of a postcard. Find a spot to relax, eat your packed lunch, and bask in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Practical Tips for the Hike:

  • Difficulty: The hike is considered moderate, suitable for hikers of various skill levels.
  • Distance: The round-trip distance is approximately 6 miles (9.7 km). It should take you 3-6 hours round trip. You want to enjoy this hike. It is about the journey! Make a day of it.
  • Timing: Summer is the ideal season for the hike when the wildflowers are in full bloom. Autumn: End of September-first week of October is amazing as well. As everything is gold and the weather is still nice.
  • Essentials: Wear sturdy hiking boots, carry plenty of water, pack a lunch and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Hiking to Hope Lake is not just a physical journey, but a soul-soothing experience that connects you to the majesty of the San Juan Mountains. you’ll find a deep appreciation for the untouched beauty of Telluride.

Unwind and Recharge: Wellness Retreats:

Telluride’s serene environment has also led to a wellness-focused culture. Indulge in yoga classes, meditation retreats, and holistic spa treatments that allow you to rejuvenate both body and mind against the backdrop of the Rockies.

Bridal Veil Falls:

A trip to Telluride would not be incomplete without visiting Bridal Veil Falls.  First let me tell you some fascinating history about Telluride. The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a period of rapid industrialization in the American West. Bridal Veil Falls played a significant role in Telluride’s mining history. In 1907, the Smuggler-Union Mining Company constructed a hydroelectric power plant at the base of the falls. This power plant harnessed the force of the falling water to generate electricity, a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. The Bridal Veil Hydroelectric Power Plant, powered by the falls, provided electricity to the booming mining town of Telluride. The plant’s unique location at the base of the falls allowed it to efficiently convert hydraulic energy into electrical power, contributing to the town’s growth and development. The power plant operated until 1953, after which it was decommissioned.  In 1994, Bridal Veil Falls and its adjacent basin were designated as a National Historic District.

You will need a 4-wheel drive to get to the top of Bridal Veil falls. There are people who walk it and also ride mountain bikes. It is a steep climb. You need to make a stop and get out of your car at the bottom of the waterfall. Take pictures and look up at the “home” on the cliff on top of the waterfall. Then when you reach the top you will experience the most beautiful views of Telluride.  The magnitude of the beauty of Telluride and the beautiful San Juan Mountains and then the valley below is incredible.  It’s something that you need to see. Bucket list for sure.

Practical Tips for an Unforgettable Trip:

Winter in Telluride

If you are driving a 4X4 to Telluride in the summer, I suggest a detour on your way to Telluride- The Million Dollar Highway     [The road is closed in the winter]

Don’t let the name of the road fool you. Just because it’s called a highway, the road is actually a dirt road, and it is highly advised to drive it only if you have a 4×4.

The Million Dollar Highway stretches between the towns of Ouray and Silverton, both of which are relatively close to Telluride in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The name “Million Dollar Highway” is said to have originated from the idea that the views along the route were worth a million dollars. The highway offers spectacular vistas of rugged mountains, cliffs, and deep gorges, making it a incredible route for a scenic drive into Telluride Colorado.

Happy Travels!
