If you dont have a rental car, I suggest purchasing a tour that provides transportaion to Coba.
– Coba, situated amidst the dense jungle, there are ancient Mayan ruins to explore. Coba grounds are expansive. You will visit well-preserved structures, including the Nohoch Mul pyramid, the tallest in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Nohoch Mul Pyramid Ascent
– Prepare for a climb! This is the only pyramid you can climb. In Chichen Itza, you are not permitted to climb the pyramids. It’s an incredible experience to be able to do this. Ascending the Nohoch Mul pyramid provides not only a physical challenge but also a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding jungle canopy. The climb is a must for those seeking a sense of accomplishment and stunning vistas.
What to Expect
Bicycle or Pedicab Exploration
– Coba’s vastness can be daunting on foot, but fear not. The site offers bicycle rentals or pedicab services, allowing you to traverse the expansive grounds comfortably.
However, I suggest strolling through the grounds until you reach your ultimate destination, the Nohoch Mul pyramid. Then I recommend renting a bike or pedicab to take you back to the parking lot.

– Coba’s jungle setting can be humid, especially during the warmer months. Ensure you carry sufficient water to stay hydrated throughout your exploration, especially if you decide to ascend the Nohoch Mul pyramid.
I suggest bringing a hydration backpack. One water bottle will not be enough. This was my mistake and I thought that I was gong to pass out. No bueno!

– Compared to more popular archaeological sites, Coba often sees fewer crowds. This creates a more intimate experience, allowing you to explore the ruins at your own pace and discover hidden corners without the hustle and bustle of people.

– Surrounding Coba are sacred cenotes, natural sinkholes revered by the Mayans. After your archaeological exploration, consider refreshing yourself in one of these crystal-clear pools, surrounded by the serene beauty of the jungle.

– Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for both walking and climbing. You’ll want to be prepared for various terrains as you navigate the site.

Weather Considerations
– Tulum’s peak season for travel is generally from late December to mid-April. During this period, the weather is typically dry and pleasant, making it an ideal time to travel. The peak season aligns with the northern hemisphere’s winter months, attracting travelers seeking to escape colder climates. However, it’s essential to note that this popularity can result in higher accommodation prices and more crowded attractions. If you prefer a quieter experience -visit during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) This might be a good alternative offering ideal weather conditions. Although, be mindful of hurricane season if traveling during September- November.
If you’re open to braving warmer temperatures, summers in Tulum can be quite hot and humid, and you’ll contend with a considerable number of tourists as well.
During my visit in July, I felt the impact of the humidity and heat primarily when exploring the ruins atop the cliffs of Tulum and at the Coba ruins. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough water, and I came close to passing out. The combination of heat and humidity can be quite intense.
However, if you’re relaxing at the beach and taking a dip in the ocean, you should be fine. Just remember to stay well-hydrated. A good tip is to drink an equal amount of water for every cocktail you have to ensure you stay hydrated.
